      The

prompt('xxxxxx(yyyy)zzzz')

      will work fine.
      What do you mean with:

>the function to parse get's it this way:
>prompt_link('xxxxxx(yyyy)zzzz')

      is it a function name???

>can i escape the ( with \( or similar?

      I think that you can't use any *special character*
      inside the function brackets.

      What are you trying to do?
      Why don't you use a proper
      var name instead?
