[Javascript] counting checkboxes

i count my checkboxes via
checkboxField.length = document.getElementsByTagName("checkbox");
there are several of them to be seen,
but around are <form>, fieldset, legend and a div.
i am getting a 0 as result.
do the other tags somehow block the document... count?
