[Javascript] Closing pop-up window on form submit

[javascript@xxxxxxxxxx (Jay Wright)]

hmmm.  something still doesn't work.  when i open a new window, i give it
the name "childWindow".  the form is named "formname".

none of the following work:
document.formname.submit();
self.formname.submit();
childWindow.formname.submit();

what am I missing?  i'm sure it's something obvious
