The language was originally named "Oak" internally at Sun. But Oak was already a trademark of some other company. So the development team came up with a few names that sounded cool (I assume the name "Java" was offered due to someone's affinity for coffee) and then gave them to the lawyers. "Java" was the first one that wasn't already trademarked, so they grabbed it.
