I believe templates or parameterized classes are not used for collections and their absence in Java is truly regrettable. If my memory serves me right Bruce Eckel in TIJ also regrets it and thinks maybe they (Sun) will add it in future as this is important feature missing. UML also defines parameterized classes and devotes substantial chunk to it. Not to inflame anybody but I think this is clear defitiency of Java as compared to languages supporting parameterized classes.
